The new school normal

Students will be returning to school in a few short weeks though it will look much different than ever before. Yadkin County Schools released details last week about the reopening which will be a combination of in-person instruction and remote learning from home.

DOBSON — In June, several Surry Community College students completed the NCWorks NextGen Youth Program, and 16 completed the JobsConnect Pathway class. The students reside in Surry and Yadkin counties.

Poplin promoted to First Lieutenant

Hiram Poplin, son of Thomas and Jilda Poplin of Jonesville, was recently promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He commissioned from the Officer Candidate School in 2023 as an infantry officer and is currently serving at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He serves as a Platoon Leader in Battle company, 05-20 Infantry Battalion.

Yadkin County graduates attend Yadkin Center for free

DOBSON — The Yadkin County Commissioners are taking a proactive step in helping young adults pursue a college education and vocational training through a scholarship program dubbed the “Yadkin Guarantee.” The scholarship will cover all in-state tuition and fees not covered by financial aid or scholarships for classes taken at Surry Community College’s Yadkin Center. It will also cover up to $750 per semester for textbooks. To be eligible for the fall semester, applications must be submitted by July 31.
